Giant sunflower grows in wet prairies, wet meadows, marsh or fen edges, and on streambanks and lakeshores primarily in the northern parts of the prairie region as well as in northern forested regions. At some locations it is common in wet roadside ditches where its cheery flowers are held high on numerous long branches.
